As farmer Li Bingcai opened the door to his cockroach farm in southwest China, an insect the size of a dart flew into his face.
Picking the critter off his forehead, he tossed it back into the dark room where some 10 million more of its kind scurried around, housed in wooden frames perched on shelves.

​Breeding cockroaches
The six-legged creatures may be a bugbear for most, but Li and other breeders in China are turning them into a niche business.
Some sell cockroaches for medicinal purposes, as animal feed or to get rid of food waste. 

Li breeds them for something else: food for human consumption.

A restaurant down the road from his small facility fries them up in famously spicy Sichuan sauce for the gutsier eaters.
"People don't believe how good it is until they try some," Li told, putting a live one into his mouth as others crawled all over the place and people visiting.

​Cures ailments
Known colloquially as American cockroaches, the Periplaneta americana is one of the largest species and are consumed for a variety of ailments: stomach ulcers, respiratory tract problems, and even simply as a tonic.
"The greatest effect of cockroaches are that they have great immunity, which is why humans will absorb its benefits after eating them," Li said, noting that in China cockroaches are dubbed "Little Strong" because they can live for days even after being cut in half.

Security
Tucked at the edge of bamboo-covered mountains in Yibin, Li's facility is a nondescript single-storey former farmhouse surrounded by crop fields and livestock farms. 

The breeding area is roughly the size of a badminton court, with windows sealed off with netting to prevent any great escapes.
Security is paramount: In 2013, some one million cockroaches escaped a farm in eastern Jiangsu province roamed free after their greenhouse was destroyed.
Li's cockroaches live between the spaces of square wooden frames that are held together by pipes and stored in racks lining two rooms. 

The place is kept warm and humid, leaving a smell reminiscent of damp clothes.

​Feeding time
Feeding time causes a frenzy -- as Li heaps a mix of ground corn, fruit and vegetable peelings on small trays, the insects suddenly swarm the platforms, crawling over each other.
"We breed them in a hygienic environment. They eat proper food -- nothing synthetic," he said.
Every three months, Li harvests the cockroaches to keep the population under control by dropping some into a vat of boiling water before dehydrating the carcasses.
Last year, he sold one tonne of dried cockroaches to a pharmaceutical factory for nearly 90,000 yuan ($13,500).

Caution
Li's main source of income is from selling the insects directly to farms or medicine factories, and this is supplemented by an online shop his daughter helped set up. 

Half-a-kilo (1.1 pounds) of whole dehydrated insects retail for between 100 and 600 yuan ($15-$90).
The bugs have detoxifying properties and can act as a diuretic. 

It is also effective for relieving sore throat, tonsillitis, (liver) cirrhosis and fluid build-up.
But other Chinese medicine experts caution that a poorly regulated industry with a low barrier of entry could result in adverse effects.

They boiled the roots in sugar and that made them heavier, therefore more profitable. 

The retailers rip off their customers, however, the fact that boiling Ginseng in sugar can strip it from its medicinal values is even worse. 

Natural ginseng has 20% content of sugar, while the fake one has 70%. 

This cannot do much for people’s health.

3. Fake sweet potato noodles – There were 5.5 tons of fake noodles made in a facility in Zhongshan city, China. 

People in 2011 started complaining that the product tasted strange. 

Investigation revealed that the noodles were composed of corn with an industrial ink which gave them the purple color and paraffin wax.

4. Baby formula – There were 47 people accused in 2004 for producing fake instant baby formula which caused death in dozens of children in Fuyang, China. 

It was made of chalk, causing children develop a “big head disease”. 

This made their heads swell and the rest of their body deteriorate slowly.

5. Cement stuffed walnuts – A man in 2012 bought shelled walnuts in Zhengshou city in China, but he got broken concrete pieces inside the shells. 

It was wrapped in paper in order to prevent it from making strange noises. 

The vendor tried profiting by selling these fake nuts which were much heavier than the real ones.

6. Beef made out of pork – Pork is less expensive in China, thus some restaurants sell it instead of beef. 

They perform some chemistry on it, using a beef extract and glazing agent in order to “marinate” the meat for 90 minutes. 

Long-term use of these products can cause cancer, deformity, and slow poisoning.

A new photo featuring dead fetuses being sold in China has circulated in the social media once again. Although information about the exact circumstances behind the photo were limited, police found this in a noodle soup restaurant in China. 

The person who uploaded the photo said the fetuses were lined up and being sold like fish. 

You can notice three people in the background who are probably the vendors of the fetuses.
Netizens have expressed their disgust over the photo and shared some very strong words of aversion towards this practice. 

As this new photo appears to be totally different from the ones posted a few years back, it is shocking to know that this still continues to happen.
The public speculates that these fetuses were aborted so that their mothers can escape the sanctions of China’s one-child policy. 

The said policy dictates that families should only have one child, unless if the first born is a girl. 

According to the US State Department, Parliament of the United Kingdom, and the human rights organization Amnesty International, China’s family planning schemes may contribute to infanticide, or infant homicide, which pertains to the “intentional killing of children under the age of 12 months.”
Some netizens even commented that a handful of restaurants offer “soup number 5,” which is said to be composed of whole fetuses. 

This soup is also believed to taste delicious and enhance sexual desire.

The inventor of these walnuts created them in order to get more money by selling them since they were heavier than the real ones.

3. Beef made of pork
In China the pork is cheaper than the beef and some Chinese restaurants sell pork instead of beef. Before it is being sold, they make some chemistry on the meet which changes its content.
They add a glazing agent on a beef extract to “marinate” it. 

This stays on the meet for more than an hour. 

The long-term consumption of this fake meat causes deformity, slow poisoning and cancer.

4. Fake green peas
The fake green peas were found in 2005 in the Hunan Province, China. 

A story was published in the local newspaper where it was said that those peas remained hard after the process of boiling and turned the water unnaturally green.
The people who have created those fake peas were selling them in order to make a lot of money. 

The peas had been produced in an illegal workshop for three years before the investigation was made and before that place was shut down by the authorities.
The fake peas were made by soy beans and snow peas which contained sodium metabisulfate, as preservative and bleach and green dye as well. 

The usage of this dye is banned since it is cancer causing and may prevent the absorption of calcium in the body.

5. Baby formula
In CBS News it was announced that almost 50 people have been accused of producing fake baby formula which is the reason for dozens of children’s deaths in the Fuyang Province in China in 2004. Its main ingredient was chalk which caused swelling of the children’s heads and slow deterioration of their bodies too, known as “big head disease”.

6. Industrial salt
The industrial salt is known as “unfit for human consumption” and people must not consume it. 

Since it is cheaper than the normal salt, 788 tons of the industrial salt was sold by 12 people over the period of 13 years.
It was sold as table salt.

As reported by the local news a market vendor in Guandong Province in China sold mud as black pepper!

In Zhongshan, China the authorities discovered a facility where 5.5 tons of fake sweet potato noodles were made.

9. Fake Ginseng
The ginseng root has been used by the Chinese people for more than 3,000 years. 

Since it has so many health benefits its price started to increase rapidly. Chinese people were trying to find out a solution to make profit of selling ginseng. 

They made the roots heavier by boiling them in sugar.
According to Wei Feng, a medicine expert from the National Institute for Food and Drug Control in China, this is a serious problem not only because merchants rip off their customers, but also because ginseng root loses its medicinal values in the process of boiling in sugar.
According to the test Wei Feng has conducted, the natural ginseng contains 20% sugar, while the fake one has 70% sugar which cannot be beneficial for our health.

10. Plastic Rice
A large amount of fake rice made of potatoes and synthetic resin was discovered by the Authorities in China. 

Like the fake peas, the fake rice had the very same characteristics.
